Well, I’m back on tumblr. It’s been quite a while (as you can see from the archives). Why did I return?
LangeOnTech, my tech blog, has been a learning experience and a great outlet for some tech writing. But it’s been a bit limiting- there have been several times when I’ve wanted to write about something that isn’t quite tech related, but haven’t had a place to do it.
That’s one reason I resurrected my tumblr, and turned it into brianlange.net.
The other is that I’ve wanted a landing page on the net for a long time. I’ve tried various services like flavors.me and about.me, but ultimately they’re not something I would want to put on a resume, or give out on a podcast or something- they show my social side, but not my work. This website should do both.
But why tumblr? Why not another Wordpress, self-hosted blog like LangeOnTech? I picked tumblr for my personal site because I wanted something I could easily post to from a mobile device, and while it’s not as extendable and flexible as WP, it does everything I need it to (Feedburner, Google Analytics, Disqus comments, Twitter integration), and allows me a good amount of control over the site.
In fact, I’ve already edited this theme to my liking and plan to at some point build my own theme from scratch, so this site becomes a true representation of my work.
So brace yourself. Because this site is going to be a firehose of what I’m writing, what I’m building, what I’m doing, and what I’m reading. It’s going to be me.
